Hello everyone!

So many exciting and wonderful things have happened since I have been able to update this blog, and I am kicking myself for waiting this long to do so!

The biggest thing that has happened in my teaching career is the beginning and completion of my practicum experience! I was placed in a 5th grade classroom with the most wonderful cooperating teacher and co-pre-service teacher to teach with. We were responsible for teaching two science lessons, two social studies lessons, and two math lessons. While there were some bumps in the road, I can definitely say that they helped me to grow as a teacher in this profession. It was my first real taste of having control of a classroom, and I loved every hectic second of it. Along with the whole class lessons, I also was paired with a student to do literacy work with every morning we were in the classroom. I was paired with a struggling reader with the sweetest attitude and demeanor. I loved my time with my student and we filled our lessons together working on fluency, spelling, and trying to have a little bit of fun too!

Here are some pictures from a couple of the lessons we did together:

To work on inference, I set up clues for my focal student to guess the item in the brown bag. She absolutely loved playing detective.

To figure out where my focal student was with her prior knowledge on cause and effect, we filled out a chart with all the knowledge she had already.

After reading the book "Once Upon a Banana", we created a cause and effect chain! We had too much fun finding all of the causes and effects in the hilarious book.

After reading the book "The Wretched Stone" by Chris Van Allsburg, we created a OQI chart. We created a post it note for everything that we observed, any questions we had, and what we could infer from our observations and questions throughout the text. She did such a wonderful job!

All in all, I had the most wonderful time in that classroom and learned so much about teaching. The biggest thing that I was introduced to and began to understand better was classroom management. My cooperating teacher taught us all sorts of attention-getters and way to address the classroom. I will definitely use these techniques and skills throughout the rest of my teaching career!

The next big event in my pre-service time is that I received my student teaching placement! I am so excited to announce that I will be in a 6th grade classroom for the fall semester. I have already met with my cooperating teacher and enjoyed a lunch with her and the elementary school's principal. While it was a little intimidating, I really enjoyed being in the educational conversation and being included in upcoming plans for the students. I begin August 7th and cannot wait to begin my 8 week student teaching experience!

Thats all for now and thank you for reading! I hope everyone is having a great summer and enjoying all of the sunshine!

Love,
Miss Lockhart
